Keeping it simple -Calories!

"Getting healthy" is usually directly correlated with weight and wanting to lose some, or if you're anything like I have been in the past, lose a lot! Many people decide to do exercise, eat more Whole Foods and just wait for the weight to come off but, something odd happens...it doesn't come off at all?

They start working out 5 times a week, lifting weights, cardio eating better and somehow no change on the scale. They may be feeling a better emotionally from the improved diet and exercise but soon frustration sets in when the results don't come and then the inevitable happens. Demoralization followed by giving up.

Here's the solution: Understanding calories. I can remember the first time trying to lose weight only to repeat the example above over and over again until I finally educated myself on calories and how they work.

What you need to know is that calories are a unit of measurement for energy contents in food and drinks. Your body needs about 2,000 calories daily to support healthy organ function, clear thinking, and sustained energy. But what happens if you consume 2,100, 2,500, or 3,000 calories?

Excess calories don’t vanish—they’re stored as fat in areas like your hips, stomach, or fingers. Fat is simply stored energy, and too many calories lead to weight gain. Calories come from three sources: protein (4 calories per gram), carbohydrates (4 calories per gram), and fat (9 calories per gram). Weight management is a numbers game. Even healthy eating can lead to weight gain if you overeat.

I’ve made this mistake—improving my diet but still consuming too many calories, which
stalled weight loss despite better cholesterol and mood. So, what’s the ideal calorie intake for your beach body? The FDA suggests 2,000 calories daily as a baseline, but personal needs vary. A 5’10” desk worker requires fewer calories than a 7’2” NBA player.

Here are simple ways to manage your caloric intake for consistent weight loss:

1-Calculate Your Needs: Use free online calorie calculators to estimate your daily intake for weight loss. If 2,600 calories daily doesn’t yield results after 1–2 weeks, reduce to 2,500 and monitor.

2-Avoid Extreme Restriction: Eating too few calories (e.g., 1,000 daily) may cause rapid weight loss but risks health issues like irregular heartbeat or fainting. It can also lead to hunger-driven overeating.

3-Fasting: Intermittent fasting, like not eating for 8 hours after waking (following 8 hours of sleep), offers benefits like increased energy, better focus, and fat-burning ketosis after 12 hours.

4-Use a Food Scale: For unpackaged foods, a scale helps track portions accurately, especially for healthier, label-free foods.

5-Be Patient: Rapid weight loss through fad diets or starvation isn’t sustainable. When rushing while trying to lose weight can lead to yo-yo dieting. Sustainable habits ensure lasting results for heroes like you!
