Keep It Simple!
That's what we're gonna be talking about today. The simple ways you can start building habits that will benefit you the rest of your life and keep you from ever back tracking ever again on your health.
When I first started to realize my health was in danger and I was on the wrong track I ended up making a very common mistake, and an admirable mistake too. I did too much too soon and gave up.
I got a gym membership, committed to going five days a week, cut my calories down to the limit, quit soda, got rid of junk food, tried working on my mental health by limiting screen time on my phone and I was rocking it!...For about a week. Then the inevitable happened. It was too much, too soon and I was not only back to my old ways, but was also trying to make up for lost time. My body went crazy with cravings and before I knew it I was ordering pizza, getting 2-liters of soda to go with it and was right back to spending every moment I could in front of my phone scrolling my life away.
My body couldn't take the shock, my will didn't have the discipline and my heart just wasn't in it. This went from being a relapse to a yo-yo of on and off again health pursuits and it was for the simple reason that I wanted big changes fast. I wanted to lose 50 pounds in the next six months because a year sounded too long, I wanted abs because, well, I wanted them and I didn't want to wait to get them so I could look down and feel good about myself.
I literally had exposed in myself the worst parts of my personality and disposition. impatience and vanity. My worry about my health seemed to disappear and all I wanted was to look good. I have to say, I have seen and known some beautiful people in this world that have gotten mortally sick. Looks are not what matters in health.
It took me a long time to learn that and in that time six months passed...several times, and I had gotten into no better shape because of it and finally I learned what mattered was making better decisions over long periods of time. That made me have too take a long look in the mirror of my soul and admit to myself what I had been doing wrong and how I could change so I would fail no longer.
1: I canceled my gym membership. I know that sounds counterintuitive to what I was trying to do, but the gym in of itself became a way for me to excuse not exercising. "It's too busy at this time." Or "I don't have the time to drive there and back." Or "I'm not sure what I should even do when I get there." I admitted ten minutes a day of exercise was better than two minutes of excuses. So, I got some 10-15 minute videos I could follow along with every day at home.
2: I admitted I had an unhealthy relationship with food. It ruled me. If there was ice cream in the house I was going to eat it and eat it and eat it until it was gone. If I tried to completely get it out of my life it was all I could think about. What could I do? Simple, I found a work around. I stopped buying tubs of it at the store and only bought cones of it out on the town once in a while. This change made it to where I was only eating it about once a month and it wasn't ruling me anymore and my intake went way down from several tubs a month to only three scoops a month. And now, not even that!
3: Soda is a monster. All that sugar. The “delicious” High Fructose Corn Syrup designed to get you addicted to it. I started small and got smaller cans. Then as I got off it I switched to those powder packs you add to your water to give it flavor. I must have had gone through ten cases of those before that eventually became my next step to just drinking water.
4: Sunlight. My doctor ran blood test on me when I complained of never really feeling well anymore. My vitamin-D was low and has a huge effect on mood, motivation, focus, metabolism and so much more. You would have to go to your doctor to see if you're Vitamin-D deficient, but here are the stats on that. %80 of Americans are estimated to be deficient in Vitamin-D. So there is a good chance you are too.
5: Patience. I have said it before in the past and I will say it again. Patience, is the key to succeed in health. If you make small changes over time, consistently and stay conscious of your goals then before you know it you'll be in a place like you have never been before. This year I made a new year’s resolution that I will not have a single sip of Soda for all of 2025. That's a long way from where I used to be going through a case of Cream Soda a week on top of random soda's in between.
6: My final point is this. Everyone is unique. My struggles will not be the same as yours and so what you have to do is see where you fail, adjust goals and move towards them. You can do it if you're honest with yourself, stay devoted to better well being and promising to make small steps over long periods of time. The day will come when you'll see a picture of yourself, "Wow! I look like a hero!"
