YOUR DIET: GMO’s, NON-GMO’s and ORGANIC

Finding truly unaltered food these days can feel like a challenge—unless you’re growing your own garden filled with non-GMO heirloom seeds, have a strong green thumb, and can afford the water to maintain it.

Food processing—what many would call “tampering”—has even become a hot political topic, often linked to rising rates of chronic disease. The truth is, most of us were never taught how to shop for healthy food. I certainly wasn’t, and I haven’t met many people who were. Sure, nutritionists exist, but that kind of guidance isn’t exactly widespread. Ironically, the best education I’ve found has come from digging through online resources and doing my own research.

I’ve come a long way from the days when I thought something like a Big Mac qualified as a healthy meal just because it had bread, meat, and lettuce. Over time, I’ve explored ideas ranging from traditional dietary guidance found in scripture to modern nutrition science. I’ve learned about the importance of whole foods—colorful fruits and vegetables, nuts, and legumes—and accepted a simple truth: if something tastes too good, it’s probably best enjoyed in moderation.

Health, diet, and nutrition are ultimately personal responsibilities. What you put into your body matters, and your health will reflect those choices. Yes, we can eat anything—but that doesn’t mean everything is good for us. The real question is: what are the consequences, and when will they show up?

That brings us to GMOs—genetically modified organisms. These are foods altered at the genetic level, meaning they’re no longer in their original, natural state. Think of it like putting the wrong fuel in your car—if the system wasn’t designed for it, things won’t run properly. That’s why I choose non-GMO foods, which remain closer to their natural form.

When a product is non-GMO, it’s typically labeled as such. For me, that label signals food my body can better digest and use effectively. Organic foods take it a step further, focusing on how food is grown—without synthetic pesticides, antibiotics, growth hormones, or artificial fertilizers. Together, organic and non-GMO standards help guide me toward what I consider cleaner, more natural options.

I understand not everyone will agree with this perspective, and that’s okay. This approach has worked for me and helped me maintain my health. I’ve chosen to go out of my way—and spend a little extra—to prioritize foods that are organic, non-GMO, and minimally processed. To me, that investment is worth it.

Taking responsibility for your health is a choice. While medical professionals play an important role, I don’t believe in handing over 100% of that responsibility. The small steps we take daily—especially with what we eat—can make a big difference over time.
