KEEPING IT SIMPLE

That’s the focus today—simple, sustainable ways to build habits that support your health for the long term and help you avoid falling back into old patterns.

When I first realized my health was heading in the wrong direction, I made a very common—yet well-intentioned—mistake: I tried to change everything at once. I signed up for a gym membership, planned to go five days a week, drastically cut calories, eliminated soda and junk food, and even reduced my screen time to improve my mental health. For about a week, it worked. Then reality set in.

It was too much, too fast. I quickly burned out and returned to my old habits—often overcompensating in the process. Cravings surged, discipline faded, and before long I was back to ordering pizza, drinking soda, and spending hours scrolling on my phone. What began as a setback turned into a cycle of starting and stopping, all driven by the desire for rapid results. I wanted dramatic change—fast weight loss, visible abs, immediate progress. In the process, I lost sight of what truly mattered: my health. I had allowed impatience and vanity to take the lead.

Over time, I came to understand that lasting health isn’t built on quick fixes—it’s the result of consistent, better choices made over time. That realization required honesty and a willingness to change my approach.

Here are the key adjustments that made a difference:

1. Simplifying Exercise
I canceled my gym membership. While it seemed counterintuitive, it removed a barrier. The gym had become an excuse—too busy, too far, or too intimidating. Instead, I committed to short, manageable workouts at home. Ten to fifteen minutes a day proved far more effective than constant excuses.

2. Improving My Relationship with Food
I recognized that certain foods had control over me. Rather than eliminating them entirely—which only made cravings stronger—I created boundaries. For example, instead of keeping ice cream at home, I chose to enjoy it occasionally when I was out. This simple shift significantly reduced both frequency and quantity.

3. Gradually Reducing Soda Intake
Cutting out soda entirely felt overwhelming, so I took a gradual approach. I started with smaller portions, transitioned to flavored water alternatives, and eventually moved to drinking mostly water. Over time, the habit lost its hold.

4. Prioritizing Sunlight and Vitamin D
After experiencing ongoing fatigue, I learned I had low vitamin D levels. This can impact mood, energy, and overall health. Spending more time in the sun and being mindful of this deficiency made a noticeable difference.

5. Practicing Patience
Patience became the foundation of my progress. Small, consistent improvements over time proved far more effective than extreme, short-term efforts. For example, committing to eliminating soda for an entire year marked a significant and lasting change compared to past habits.

6. Embracing Individuality
Everyone’s journey is different. What works for one person may not work for another. The key is to identify your own challenges, adjust your approach, and remain honest with yourself. Progress comes from steady effort and a commitment to long-term well-being.

In time, these small, consistent changes add up. One day, you may look at yourself and realize just how far you’ve come—and feel proud of the person you’ve become.
