Let’s Talk Digestion
In today’s fast-paced, hustle-and-bustle lifestyle, it’s easy to rush from one event to the next—and from one meal to another. But taking the time to re-learn how we eat is essential. Good digestion plays a major role in overall health, and a few simple habits can make a big difference.
Here are some practical tips to help improve your digestion:
1. Support Your Saliva Production
Drink a full glass of water as you sit down to eat. This helps stimulate saliva production, which is key for breaking down food properly. It also prepares your stomach for the meal ahead.
2. Watch Your Portions
A helpful guideline for meat servings is to keep them about the size of your palm. Consider using smaller plates to naturally control portion sizes. When dining out, where portions are often large, ask for a to-go container right away and set aside half of your meal before you begin eating.
3. Slow Down and Chew Thoroughly
Aim to chew each bite 8–10 times, and set your fork down between bites. Eating more slowly reduces the amount of air you swallow, which can help prevent bloating and discomfort.
4. Stay Hydrated During Meals
Drinking liquids—especially water—while you eat can support digestion and help your body process food more efficiently.
5. Avoid Overeating
Try to skip second helpings and avoid snacking while cooking. It takes time for your brain to register fullness, so you may feel satisfied sooner than you expect. If you’ve ever felt overly full to the point of discomfort, you know how important this is. Eating slowly and mindfully can help you avoid that feeling altogether.
6. Cut Back on Sugary Drinks
Replace sugary beverages with water or lightly flavored options. Adding a splash of natural fruit juice or using products like Propel can help ease the transition. Over time, your cravings for sugary drinks will decrease.
7. Stay Active
Simple habits like parking farther away and getting in extra steps each day can support your overall health. Combined with better eating habits, these small changes add up quickly.
Getting healthy starts with small, consistent steps—and you absolutely can do it.
