**Attention! Maki-Health may be deemed offensive or objectionable to some Maki-Health is not intended to replace your Physician's guidance. Maki-Health is simply the opinion of the author. Makimono always recommends that you check with your Physician prior to making any changes to your current health practices to ensure there are no contradictions to any preexisting conditions or ailments and that you remain in good health.
WHOLESOME FOODS
Digestion is the first step in properly utilizing the food we consume. The digestive process begins in the mouth, where saliva and chewing play a critical role. It is recommended that you chew, or masticate, your food at least eight times before swallowing. From there, the rest of the digestive process continues in the stomach and intestines.
Whole foods, often referred to as wholesome foods, are the most nutritious form of sustenance for our health. These foods are minimally processed and remain as close as possible to their natural state, allowing them to retain their nutrients, fiber, and beneficial phytochemicals. For example, a banana is most nutritious when freshly harvested from the tree. By the time it reaches consumers, it has been picked, transported to a grocery store, and placed on a shelf. This minimal level of processing helps preserve important nutrients such as vitamin C and potassium, avoiding the losses often associated with heavily processed foods.
Whole foods include a wide variety of nutrient-dense options. Examples include steel-cut or rolled oats (rather than instant or pre-flavored varieties), fresh fruits like apples, berries, or oranges (instead of canned fruit packed in syrup), and fresh vegetables such as spinach, carrots, or broccoli. Other excellent choices include legumes like lentils or black beans, wild-caught fish such as salmon or mackerel, cage-free eggs, and whole grains like quinoa or brown rice. These foods provide essential nutrients(vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and healthy fats) that support immune function, heart health, and energy production.
The nutritional advantage of whole foods comes from their minimal processing. Unlike processed foods, which often contain added sugars, sodium, and preservatives, whole foods are free from artificial additives that can reduce their health benefits. For instance, fresh fish provides omega-3 fatty acids without the added sodium found in many canned varieties. Similarly, less-processed eggs may contain higher levels of certain nutrients compared to heavily processed alternatives. The longer a food remains removed from its original source—whether plant, vine, or tree—the more it undergoes oxidation, a natural process that can degrade nutrients like vitamins C and E. For example, cut vegetables exposed to air gradually lose antioxidants, and canned fruits may have reduced vitamin content due to heat processing.
To gain the greatest benefit from whole foods, it is best to consume them as fresh as possible. Shopping at farmers’ markets or growing your own herbs, fruits, and vegetables can help ensure peak freshness and nutrient density. However, accessibility can sometimes be a challenge, as fresh whole foods may be more expensive or less available in certain areas. To make them more affordable, consider buying produce in season, purchasing in bulk, or freezing fresh items yourself to preserve nutrients without added ingredients.
Incorporating a variety of whole foods into your diet supports long-term health, helps reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, and encourages sustainable eating habits. Whenever possible, sourcing foods directly from their natural origins ensures optimal nutrition, flavor, and overall well-being.
